Earwig Traps

We have an earwig plague here this year. Any new tasty leaf that appears in the garden, disappears overnight. They ate my first zucchini's, beans, strawberries and anything else that they could munch on. The globe artichokes planted near the courtyard now have lace for leaves! A few years ago my friends Steve and Glenda from Lakeview Organics told me to put out cooking oil in containers around the garden. The earwigs are attracted to the oil and can't climb out of it once they take a bath. I had been doing this, but it can be a bit messy and they fill up with water if it rains or you forget where you hid them when you water from above with the hose. Steve and Glenda have come up with this unique new style of earwig trap. You simply cut some holes in a plastic takeaway container and place oil in the bottom and cover with the lid. This stops the risk of the containers filling with water and you can reuse them several times. If you have chickens they will love this organic way of dealing with earwigs and eagerly finish them off for you.
