The Hungry Gap

FROM THE GARDEN
Well the hungry gap does exist especially if you don’t plant your winter vegetables in January. It is a difficult time of the year to think of planting for the winter. Thoughts are more for a holiday at the beach or just trying to get away from the scorching heat. It is difficult to get seedlings established in January as the days are so hot and they really need to be watered twice a day. I did plant some beetroot although not anywhere as many as last year, along with leeks, rainbow chard and cabbages.
So what is in the garden ready to use? A couple of nice colourful rows of rainbow chard and rainbow beetroots, some spring onions and at least three cabbages that is ready to pick along with a few small leeks and some Italian parsley and rocket. Not much really is it? Note to self, plant more next year!

Planting for today, 1 Blood Orange to espalier on the side fence, 1 Pomegranate in the front garden, 1 Nagami Cumquat on the outside of the courtyard wall. 1 Fig Tree beside the compost bins and some Dutch purple podded peas along with some Yellow podded peas in the vegetable garden. Not a bad day!
